John Terry has offically been exposed for pace this tournament. Why is he favored over Rio?
John Terry
Like me many of you have always suspected JTs lack of accleration or speed in genereal but this tournament he has really been exposed, Ibrahimovic who isnt the fastest and also for the goal against Ukraine (that Terry didnt get too).
I want to ask why he always gets favored over better defenders and always seems to get his way. He is bog standard and players have been covering for him for years. I.e. Gallas, Carvalho and Ashley Cole.
Lets not mention his performance against Liverpool (oops). How do you rate JT?

The reason John Terry was favoured before Rio i would assume that he will put his body on the line unlike Rio, as for pace Rio is not blessed with pace either, so if you needed to pick between the two, the England manager was thinking John Terry,

The thing is he gives 100% on that pitch for England, he is willing to put his head in the way of things that no other player would. he has the courage to do things other players wouldn't and i don't mean banging your team mates misses. I like him at the back due to his commitment, his quality has decreased over the last few years but he is still a commanding defender and what he brings to the team motivation wise ect i feel is enough.

would choose him over Ferdinand any day, may have a lack of pace but makes up for that with other aspects of his game, and also his commitment, always gives his all for the team

he's a great player, deserves his place in the team. if he hadn't been accused of being racist or shagged vanessa peroncell then no one would be doubting him

He's been alright this tournament but not great, made the clearance yesterday from the dodgy Ukraine goal/no goal but he was at fault for them to have the chance in the 1st place. Lescott has made him look good in some games cause Lescott has been class all tournament. Would like to see Jagielka instead of Terry and Ferdinand and partner Lescott with Jagielka at the back. Terry's lack of pace is worrying, any striker can beat him for pace

Unfair. Personally I think he is a better defender than Ferdinand. He isn't as quick but his positional sense, desire and commitment can't be questioned. It's unfortunate that Cahill got injured because he would have had the pace to cover for Terry. If it wasn't for the off field controversies his position in the team wouldn't even be debated.

I think to stay he is bog standard is hugely unfair. He has been a great player for many years now, he isn't the quickest but he reminds me of the likes of Lucio, Nesta and Maldini. He times his challenges well and knows when and when not to dive in. He has the rare poor performance like you mentioned against Liverpool but he is still one of the best players we have got. He is in the autumn of his career so I wouldn't expect him to be as quick as he once was but he is still an outstanding player.
