Ashley & Derek Are Too Cheap For Our Own Good!
Newcastle United
Observing the transfer rumour mill going round this summer has been interesting. We seem to be linked with a number of decent players, in which we have actually made formal enquiries and bids. The Andy Carroll offer came from no-where and was very exciting to see at the time.
However, unfortunately there has been a running theme throughout this summer which has been slowly pissing me off more and more through each day and that's Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias are embarrassingly cheap! More than I ever thought they were before.
It's got to the point of embarrassing now and actually quite alarming. Especially to our potential reputation within football. Some of the offers we have made for top class players has been a farce at times. We went in for Douglas, who is considered a top class defender on his day, with a bid of around £3million. £3million?! Anyone with a brain will tell you that this kid is worth at least double that. They rightfully told us to go f*ck ourselves.
We also have been chasing Debuchy for weeks now. Everyone knows about it. What everyone else also knows is that he is a top class player. He was good in the Euros and didn't do anything to harm his reputation. The lad, for whatever reason, has even made it public that he actually WANTS to join NUFC. Forget Inter Milan who are also chasing him, forget Chelsea, he wants to play for Newcastle Utd. Brilliant. Unbelievable. This is too good to be true. That's one decent signing in the bag then...well no not exactly. He is still at Lille and it seems we are no nearer to securing his signature. He has the pen in his hand waiting for this thing to go through. What the f*ck is going on?!
Here's a conversation that would represent the situation nicely:
NUFC Fans, 'Debuchy wants to come doesn't he. Sign him up than yea?!'
Mike and Derek, '....well no not exactly.'
Fans, 'Well what's the problem?'
Mike and Derek, 'We can't agree a fee.'
Fans, 'Oh I see, are his club asking for too much money and overstating his worth.'
Mike and Derek, 'Well, no, not really.'
Fans, 'What? I don't understand'
Mike and Derek, 'Well they want around £8mil'
Fans, 'Ok then, that's seems about right. Its a moderate fee for someone of his ability, I don't see the problem.'
Mike and Derek, 'Well we are a pair of greedy fat ######## who like to get things on the cheap and don't like to actually pay for things that are there rightful worth.'
The situation is embarrassing now and has officially ###### me off. If we miss out on one of the best full backs in Europe, who actually wants to sign for us and nobody else, that is worth a moderate amount of money that is more than affordable to us...then that will be an absolute disgrace. How cheap do these clowns want to be?! If Lille were asking for £10million than I could understand it. If Debuchy turned us down for a move to Inter Milan or Chelsea instead than I could understand it. What I don't understand is how a player that is hell bent on a move to us, is valued at his correct price, isn't already on Tyneside! Never mind no where near signing as we speak.
The scousers laughed off our initial bid for Andy Carroll as not even worthy of considering, which is always nice to hear (not) and we haven't exactly came back with an improvement have we? Are these blokes for real? Yohan Cabaye had a release clause in his contract which is the reason we got him so cheap. Demba Ba had the same for his free transfer. Mike & Derek got themselves a good deal on Papiss Cisse as he was worth 15m Euros this time last summer but his price came down significantly to 10mil in January and Mike got his cheque book out. Fair play. But where has his cheque book gone? We obviously have the means as we are making bid's for players left right and centre.
Now I am all for getting the best price possible and not being taken for a ride. I get that and agree with it. The Freddie Shephard days were shocking at times, but this is beyond that now. It's too far the other way. Bidding for players at half there value is not going to get us anywhere and only develop our football club with a reputation as cheap, time wasters who aren't worth listening to. £3million for Douglas? £4million for Debuchy? £4mil for Anita? A loan and £12mil for Carroll? Who are you they trying to kid?! Get Douglas in for £5-6mil, Debuchy in for £7-8mil, Anita in for £6-7mil and Carroll for £15mil (if not a loan first).
It's what they are worth, it's what their clubs want & rightfully expect, they aren't exactly massively expensive apart from maybe Carroll and the most ridiculous thing about these deals...is that the players above actually want to sign for us and are waiting for deals to be agreed. When was the last time we had these type of players wishing to join us? If we can't afford all of the above then fine. Just do the important deals like Debuchy and Douglas first and see where we go afterwards.
But I don't think it is a case of not being able to afford them...it's a case of being too cheap to f*cking pay for them!

Newcastle are a good side. Its only been 2 years since you got promoted and last season was a shot out of the blue. Throwing money around to try and chase a bigger team never works in the long run. Who knows last season could have been a one season wonder or the start of Newcastle's rise. Stupidly chucking money about won't be help you. Debuchy has said he wants to join you so why throw excess money at Lille when you can do what Chelsea nearly did last season with Modric. Debuchy will make loud noises to get out of Lille and they will be more likely to sell on a cut price deal. Douglas is untested at your level so why go pay more to see him flop? Newcastle are doing this the correct way

i think people are getting carried away with this transfer policy, great players just dont fall from the trees for free. yes carr has found great deals and bargains but there comes a time when we are gonna have to pay what the player is worth. 8 mill for french right back aint bad, how much do we expect to get for simmo?

@NufcBano we've said we'll pay over 4million for Debuchy but with any transfer it takes time for deals to be done. With add ons etc. to be made fees are never divulged anyways but it can be more than just not paying enough that stops a deal going through. If we get a deal for Debuchy then great but if not i'm confident that we'll buy a just as good player if not better for that position. If we'd of carried on buying with the same policy as we used to we would've been in financial ruin. At least now we're running by our own means and not spending over the odds money

@ateeq Ba - release clause. Cabaye - minimum fee release clause. Tiote - good deal. Ben Arfa - paid the asking price. Debuchy is worth £7mil of anyone's money & we can clearly afford it. £4mil is an insult. Dont confuse our general transfer policy with what we have seen so far this window. I like it. I like getting a good deal and not paying over the odds. I am not a moron. I dont want these deals to fall through unnecessarily. Debuch could quite easily say, 'Bugger this, I am for to Milan'. Douglas has already hinted at a change of heart by saying he isnt leaving Twente. We're taking the #### and I don't see the point. Lille and Twente are not being unreasonable with their asking price.

What he does with his personal cash is up to him really, we have to trust there judgment as they have bought fantastically well at great prices and shown that he will put the money up for the right price ie cisse.
A lot of you seem to think £7mil for Debuchy and £6mil for Douglas is 'over the odds'. Also mentioning the Freddy Shepherd days. Seriously? What has paying a very good price for 2 top players we want, who want to come to us, got to do with paying over the odds like Shephard? Dont insult my intelligence, please. We're dragging out heels over a couple of mil for no good reason. Mike Ashley p*ssed away a million quid down the casino in 20 mins and laughed about it. Get some perspective. Why risk these deals falling through for the sake of being a tight c*nt. Get the best possible deal - yes. Take the #### by offering half of what the player is worth and stick to it - not so good.

@henry but if we buy Remy (which we won't) he may infact turn out to be rubbish, not all strikers cause they're good in one league are good in the premiership. If we were a Man U or City of this world then yeh go n splash out on a player for 20million but we aren't. We're using money we've earned from the season from players or other means to buy our players which also means we're abiding by Uefa's rules for money which they're introducing. This means we can't go and spend massive amounts but Graham Carr and his scouting team are that good that we'll find little hidden gems from other leagues and not pay much at all. Much better way than spending 30 million on a potential player who's garbage

We're in a good financial position because of the great buys they been making, spending big doesn't mean anything spending wisely does. Why pay 8 if we can get them for 4/5/6 ?
i dont think 8 mill is over the odds i agree with @nufcbano, everything he stated apart from the caroll part, i would push the boat out and buy loic remy instead. but it does seem that we make this underhand bids, just short of asking price to appease the fans, so that mike ashley can turn around and say we tried to get him but they wouldnt sell. i for one aint buying it, we are in a good financial situation, i say, we pay to move on, we dont have to wait for the likes of simpson to be sold, we are gonna get peanuts for him anyway.

I like Ashley because he is a business man not like previous owners who thought top players and big wages meant higher positions
Big Dennis Wise

Lol you all hated him before now he is your saviour. What about Dennis Wise?
Lol so you wanna pay over the odds unnecessarily? Look where we ended up last time we did that, with Michael Owen, Luque, Martins, Boumsong etc, then back in the championship, I'm glad them days are over tbh and I'm trusting Ashley, Pardew, Carr etc to bring in the right players for good prices
mate, a grip is what you need to get, your in Europe after being in the league for 2 seasons have a top class manager and a brilliant spine to the team. Don't get me wrong, £8m for Debuchy is a good deal, but Mike Ashley is trying to get the lowest possible price out of the situation which isn't hard now the player hasn't now turned up for pre-season training, they'll just want him to go A.S.A.P because he's upsetting squad harmony

@NUFCbano Ba = free, Cabaye £4.8, Tiote £3.5, HBA £5m.....newcastle dont pay big money and big wages - its about getting the right player in - Graham Carr has found some gems - i'd rather see shrewd signings pay off - no point in paying over the odds....ie Debauchy - £8m for a right back? thats steep by newcastle standards

@NufcBano As a Newcastle fan I can see where Mike Ashley is coming from. Why pay over the odds for players when you can get just as good quality probablys cheaper else where? When you take Douglas for instance he is valued at around 5 million euro's so our price isn't far off, but he's a player who's tempramant can be questioned since he failed to turn up for pre season training so Newcastle are rightfully cautious. We're also now also on the verge of signing a young Australian who can quite easily take his place in the team since I think he would only be back up anyways, and Tavernier has been very good pre season so can easily cover till we get the right player for the job. With Debuchy Newcastle are close to agreeing but again the price being quoted is high since he's only a right back. I would imagine Newcastle are very close to completing the signature for him but we're also waiting for Simpson to be bought before we can add any extra funds to Debuchy's transfer if needed. Newcastle's transfer policy is good cause we don't pay over the odds and the players are pretty much all youngsters who are nearing their prime. I wouldn't want to go and buy players for over the odds prices and stupid wages cause we've all seen that Owen, Luque and Viana didn't live upto their expectations with the price tags for them. You've seen with Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Cisse, Ba, Santon and Tiote that these are all quality and we paid hardly anything for them but clubs know how we work now so will of course ask for more money off us since our scout is class. I don't want to go back to the Freddie Shephard days of buying a player and stupid wages if it's going to put us in the s**t again when we can buy players with more class for cheap money. Look at the wider picture before criticising the board cause they aint exactly got us in bad shape!
