World rankings

Are world rankings a joke? They certainly aren't accurate. England are a decent team don't get me wrong but 3rd in the world? Far from it. How do they have an ok tournament (a lot of teams played better) and jump to 4th in the world? Then without playing a game they jump up 1 more place :s 3rd is the highest position England have ever been in but the team is miles from the best team England have had. So my point is are the FA handing out sexual favours to FIFA or something :p coz I don't see how else they would get that high.

The biggest shock in the rankings for me are England in 3rd, Scotland in 46th (when about 4 years ago they were 17th :s ), greece in 12th and brazil in 13th :s and how are Italy 6th behind Uruguay, Portugal and England???
@ateeq I wouldn't go that far but they aren't in the top 10 12th-13th maybe 10 or 11 at a push
that is embarassing - from what i have seen england would be about 30 in world rankings

@Italian_celt67 true, though personally i'm quite realistic and before the euros I predicted England would lose in the quarters, which they did. At the time though, I was willing them to get to the next round which is partly what the media does, it predicts and instills confidence in the fans

@Posford that's why you "under achieve" as your media calls it when intact that's just how good the team is they don't play bad but there are better teams and a lot of pundits and the press need to realise that
@Italian_celt67 haha I agree with you there, I reckon Sepp Blatter just does it to keep the FA happy, it's so innacurate and gives England fans false confidence when it comes to big tournaments

@Posford my point exactly its so inaccurate it's ridiculous everyone up in Scotland think the FA are handing out sexual favours to go up in the rankings coz everyone knows they are not 3rd and this is not the best team England have ever had by a mile
Realistically, England are about 8th in the world. 3rd is waaaaaay to high. How are Brazil in 13th?

@mrsentah tell me about it no matter how good Scotland play we don't move up very far but if we get beat we immediately go down a few places but England could do anything and still go up in the rankings :s and that's not a go at England its just confusing how they figure it out

@Baldersmith but look at the teams you get in your qualifiers you always get really easy groups so Ofcourse you win most games and then you get to the tournament and get beat when you play a big team that's not 3rd place material I can think of a few teams better than England you should be about 10th probably which is stil respectable
Since going out of the World Cup England have only lost twice, to France and to Holland. This included beating the world and European champions which adds massive points to the ranking system. Obviously we were beat by Italy but it goes down as a draw as far as ranking points are concerned. No, we're not the third best team in the world in reality but the way the points system works it seems that, statistically, we are.
