Wayne Rooney will grab all the headlines as he sends England through, top of the group to face Italy in the Euro 2012 Quarter-Finals with a header from close range. However, despite Rooney being the name on English fans lips, it should be Steven Gerrard. Unbelievable, just different class. He's now got 3 assists, which without, We'd have only scored twice and they would have both come in the Sweden game. Driving force of the team and everything goes through him; complete all-round pro as well with great leadership qualities. He will only truly be recognised after he finishes playing (which I hope is still a long time away), but he is Englands best player in my opinion. Do you agree?

@Stokecity11 Hardly. Hart's been on the scene 5 minutes in comparison to Gerrard and you say he's better? I think Hart's had a below average Euro's to be fair. Should have saved from Nasri and not decisive enough in the Sweden game (although he has made some good saves too). He will be Englands No.1 for years to come but he is some way off Steven Gerrard. Hart will be considered a very good player at the end of his career, but "Captain Fantastic" Steven Gerrard will be hailed as one of the all-time greats.

Rooney is the poster boy. Gerrard is the heart and soul of the team. He has by far been the best player for us in the tournament so far. All the Liverpool lads have played well if I'm honest though.

He isnt only the best english player, he's the most "english" player in the squad. Gerrard is such a great player when he has someone like Parker/Lucas to partner him. As a midfielder, there is no one more complete IMO. He doesnt only get the assists, but he's everywhere all the time. Always working hard for his team and putting his body on the line.

Yes totally agree gerrard is different class and 1 of only 3 England players that perform time and again the others being john terry and ashley cole.even wayne rooney hasnt performed the way he does for united on a CONSISTENT BASIS!

Gerrard is terrific in his position, but ashley cole is the worlds best CB and in terms on what he does in contrast to the rest of the team, Cole is englands best player positionally.
