£21m for striker

Liverpool have made a £21m offer for Atletico Madrid's Brazilian striker Diego Costa.
The offer is understood to have triggered the 24-year-old's release clause and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful of completing the deal swiftly.

Costa who joined Atletico from Valladolid in 2010, scored 10 goals in the Primera Liga last season.

The striker made his international debut in March this year.

Liverpool have declined to comment on the bid, but sources at Anfield insist the move has no bearing on Luis Suarez's future, which has not changed since Arsenal made a £40,000,001 bid.
The Uruguayan has not submitted a formal transfer request nor has he contacted the Premier League to dispute Liverpool's interpretation of a clause in his contract that the player disputes.
Suarez claims he should be able to talk to Arsenal about a move after their bid, although the Reds disagree.

The move for Costa is something of a surprise, but Atletico head coach Diego Simeone has hinted the striker could be allowed to move on following the arrival of David Villa from Barcelona.

Earlier this week, Rodgers said he would only bring in new signings if they he believed they would improve the squad. "They have to be of the right quality, that's the bottom line," he said
"We've got money to spend on getting that quality in, but if it's not available I won't waste it for the sake of bringing a player in."

Thoughts y'all!?

@rateyourplayeroficial That would be ridiculously stupid. "Right, we need a winger, who do we go for?" "Costa?" "No" "Willian" "No" "Huntelaar?" "Perfect."

@Dent_Ford 8 were in the Copa, against poor teams.

If 20 in 44 is his peak--and at 24 assuming he'll be there for the next 4 to 5 years--and you'd value him at £10 mil, people would be queueing up to do business with you...

@Dent_Ford He's pretty much at his peak. Forlan had a poor season in 10/11, if you watched him you'd see that he's worth about £10m

@TheMightyPotter He's 24 years old--Been at AM for 3 years (1 of them wiped out by injury)--Put in 8 goals in 39 apps behind Aguero and Forlan in his first, lost a year, and put in 20 in 44 in the third--Everyone has to start from somewhere... I'm NOT saying he's the second coming of Pele, just that in this market £21 mil is not a bad price for a player with pretty good potential from what I can see

@Dent_Ford He's had one decent season...

@KavLFC sure as hek didn't look like it when I saw him.

@TheMightyPotter From everything I've read about him, and given the surreal atmosphere of transfer fees that now exists--I mean this is the world where, if the reports are to be believed, RM is coming up with 105 mil for Gareth Bale--I would assume that AM would value a 24 y.o. striker, coming off his "Breakout" campaign where he put in 20 goals in all comps including 10 in the League and 8 in a cup run that saw AM hoist the Copa Del Rey, slightly higher than 21 mil.

Shocking kind of fee for a guy with a below average record. Although not surprising. Liverpool are use to over spending on average players.

@Dent_Ford You've never seen him play? Why say " £21m would be a good price for him"?!!

@TheMightyPotter I've never seen him play, but according to everything I've read, he spent a considerable amount of time at winger with Falcao up front

@Dent_Ford He played as a second striker, not a winger.

@TheMightyPotter He had 10 league goals, PLUS 8 goals in the Copa Del Rey, AND 2 more in Euro Competition for a healthy 20 goals in 44 Apps in all competitions--Not bad imho for someone who spent much of that time playing out of position as a winger behind Falcao

@Jonevarro He played very much in the shadow of Falcao

Apparently AM are denying that an offer has been made or that they would be willing to sell. Surely the media would not have made this up?!
