£27m bid for Luke Shaw

Manchester United have bid £27million for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw. Thoughts on this? Southampton apparently want more than that. £27m is a lot, but Shaw is a very good player and still only 18! Good left-backs are hard to come across and he would provide many years of service! Only problem is he's a Chelsea fan, so might he wait for them to make a bid?

@jimbo1984 No, Zaha loan Fabio bought I believe.
Welbecks treated harshly in my opinion, think he's a good player and finishing is improving.
Cleverley wasn't good last season but in my opinion he was played too deep, I think he would be good in the 4-3-3 Van Gaal employs (if he comes). For me he'll work out to be a decent squad player, who won't make many noises about being back up and won't demand too much.
Fellaini has been terrible I agree, I'm just not sure the Glazers will take a hit after 1 season.
I disagree on Smalling, thought there were worse players, and think he's a good, young defender, particularly as back up... He's not a right back though.
Looks like Zaha again won't work at United but who knows what the new manager will want.
I've also heard Young is on a mega wage, not sure who would take him.

@MB_Ktubes kagawa is decent but I would personally rather us have a couple exciting wingers.. The whole Rooney, kagawa, mata, thing makes it hard to leave a good player out or to for all 3 in a starting line up

@Doozers20 do we sell fabio?
I thought it was another loan deal?
A few of them were players I think should leave...
Welbeck has said he's considering leaving a few times through the season, may be different now moyes has gone, plus he's ####,
Cleverly - needs no explaination
Fellaini has been terrible and smalling was probably our worst player last season..
Zaha looks like he's going to palace on loan

@MB_Ktubes I really think Kagawa is a talented player, but he's not shown it enough, which could be due to him playing out of position, either way I don't want to see him go.

I'm guessing you meant full back rather than winger as you said United need a winger but then mentioned full backs. I want to see 3 or 4 players come in to replace 7 or 8 (trimming the squad due to lack of European football and not so many games).

The 3 I think are necessities are left back, centre back and central midfield. I've said for about a year that I'd love Shaw at United, a realistic option for a strong leader in defence, and a player I've been impressed with is Diego Godin, I think he's more realistic than some touted i.e. Hummels, and I've never been a massive fan of Garay (though admittedly I've not seen a great deal of him), I think Godin would go well next to Evans. I like Vertonghen too but I hear United are reluctant to do business with Spurs ever again (think he'd go better next to Jones), as a midfielder I like Khedira and Song (again more realistic than the likes of Gundogan, Vidal and Pogba), though Javi Martinez may be coaxed as rumour is he doesn't like playing centre half.

Van Gaal traditionally plays 4-3-3 (in fact he's come out and said it), which means only one place for a striker (I'd expect to be RVP), so I'd be asking Rooney to play in midfield (think he has all of the attributes to), otherwise I'd perhaps play him left of the attacking 2 (played there in 2008 a lot) and buy a box to box midielder (I like Rakitic and Dembele as realistic options). Obviously there are more players than I know of but these are just examples of the type of player I would like to see.

So the team would look something like this... De Gea, Rafael, Godin, Evans, Shaw - Khedira, Rooney/Rakitic, Mata - Kagawa/Rooney, Januzaj, Van Persie.

I would also look at the possibility of getting Ashley Cole on a free, to give Shaw some guidance and rotate with, but I think that's a little unrealistic. i also think Cleverley would do better in a 4-3-3

@jimbo1984 Fabio was gone in January... Smalling, Cleverley and Welbeck won't be gone. I very much doubt Fellaini will be either, and I don't think Zaha will be.

@jumbo1984 @Doozers20 What do you think about Kagawa? I personally am a big fan but I've not seen a great deal. I don't think United should go crazy with this rumoured £200 million. Focus on key areas such as a top class centre-half, a midfielder and a winger. Just look at Spurs. Majority of their signings were £20 million + and didn't gel. I'd go with Garay from Benfica, Kroos from Bayern Munich and Baines/Shaw. Players that can fit in but don't disrupt the squad. So you could go with De Gea, Rafeal, Evans, Garay, Baines/Shaw, Carrick, Kroos, Kagawa, Mata, Rooney, Van Persie in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

We could nearly pick a starting 11 of united players that could be gone by august..
Lindegaard
Smalling, rio, vidic, Evra ,
Nani, fletcher giggs,Young
Anderson
Welbeck
Cleverly, fabio, Fellaini, zaha
Out squad is awful

@Jonevarro let's wait for that rumoured 200 million to be spent before we make such claims.

@Jonevarro Vidic, Rio and Evra alone will take a massive chunk off the wage bill. Uniteds squad is that big it will be impossible to make additions without letting some go, particularly without the games the Champions League would add, as far as fees go I don't see amazing figures, but I expect more out than in, purely because they don't need as big a squad next season, so the wage bill possibly won't be as high.

Players I expect to not be at Old Trafford next season are... Rio, Vidic, Evra, Anderson, possibly Nani and Young (maybe on loan), I also wouldn't be massively disappointed to see leave are Hernandez, Fellaini, Lindegaard and unfortunately Fletcher.

@Doozers20 I can't imagine United bringing much in sales wise, who would you sell?

  ·     ·     ·   5 years

Doozers20 · Man Utd fan   In reply

@Jonevarro I very much doubt United will spend the £200 million that's being quoted without getting a decent chunk back (in fees and wages), I doubt they'll spend £200 mil anyway.

@jimbo1984 I very much doubt United will spend the £200 mil rumoured unless they get considerable money back (which includes wages i.e. I very much doubt Shaw would be on half of what Evra is on).

United won't get 2 centre backs, and they won't buy a right back this summer. I could even see them not buying one centre back (and I do believe they need one). A midfielder or 2 has to be priority for me, then an experienced centre half.

I think Chelsea and City will struggle to buy too many players without having to sell due to FFP, City have already been done for this and building a squad to win Champions League will be that bit hard if they get the punishment of only being able to register 21 players.

@jimbo1984 at least Chelsea are trying to improve by selling players to fund players as well, the chelsea model is to buy younger players that last several years as well. If Courtois replaces Cech, which I believe he should, and a new LB comes in then Terry will be the only 30+ player in our team with the majority under 25.

The scary thing is, we also now need to replace Rio and Vidic..plus Rafael is a dodgy RB.. We could end up dorm ding £100 mill on defenders at this rate...
Comments about buying the league?
No team will compete with Chelsea and city without spending..
Liverpool did well this year but Chelsea are in transition, united collapsed and even city were awful at times...
Chelsea have already secured Diego Costa.. To add to torres,ba, etto, lukaku.. And all the other attacking payers a the club and you can guarentre they will sign more..
Pelligrini had already said he will need to build a team capable of winning champions league for next season...
Liverpool will need to buy 4/5 players to compete next year...
We are past talking about teams trying to buy the league, that damage has already been done..

@releasethekraken Considering loads of papers are claiming they're gonna spend £200m this summer and they've already had considerable outlay, yes it is.

@Jonevarro making a bid for one player isn't "attempting to buy the league".

Also how has no one brought up the fact United are attempting to "buy the league", something they resent Chelsea/City for.

Shaw IMO as a player is worth £10-15m, then add about £5m as he's English. £15-20m would be reasonable IMO. Fullbacks don't sell for that much, £27m for him is far too much. You can't just 18 as an excuse either, just because he has the potential doesn't mean that much, you don't spend millions and millions on "potential". To those saying he's premier league proven, he's been decent but he has been massively over hyped due to the fact he's English. We've seen it all before, an English youngster being over hyped. £27m could turn out to be a bargain, I just don't think it is.

No definitely not! Shaw is quality, personally I'd be asking for a lot more maybe somewhere between 30-40 mil!
