Could he do a job for England?

He has the fight we were lacking against Montenegro, he's fit enough as he showed last night against Barca, and he's still got the skills, and he wants a recall, so could David Beckham come back to play for England again?

@slufsar he didn't exactly struggle and created a few dangerous situations from what I saw.

I think i've heard English fans moaning about the incluson of big names ahead of players who's on form a million times. Including Beckham would be an extreme case of that. If anything he proved yesterday that he's not good enough for England anymore.

@Baldersmith I couldn't see Beckham making the starting 11 for United pretty much every week to be honest.

I'd have him over Cleverley.

I think the fact he could do a job for England says more about the state of the England team then it does about his ability.

@owonefi7 Privvy to the Beckham camp are you? We'll see. We all know why Ferdinand hasn't been included for England so far.

@Doozers20 *sigh* he's at PSG to promote himself and it wasn't the manager's decision to bring him in, the majority of his appearances so far have been cameos, and that's all they will be, if Rio Ferdinand struggles to make England squads, Beckham certainly won't get in

@owonefi7 Like I said before, what other top team has a player to 'protect a full back?' If Johnson is poo defensively, don't put him in defence? A defensive midfielders job is to cover for full backs, i.e. Busquets moves back into defence when Alba and Alvez/Arbeloa/Ramos ventures forward for barca and Spain. Beckham has never terrified a full back, he has never given the full back a chance as the ball is whipped in accurately well before the full back even comes into play. Of course his ability to pick out a player from anywhere would improve a team, like I said I'd definitely make him a contender if he does well for PSG

@Doozers20 he had an effective career in the past, as a full back, I'd be far more terrified of the ox, lennon etc as they have pace. Milner chases hard, it's an underrated quality, he's needed to protect Johnson, as he isn't the best defender, I just don't get your point, are you seriously saying he can still do a job for England and improve the team? His last 25 caps were a waste of time, all 20 minute cameos

@owonefi7 He'd be good as a deep midfielder or wide, Walcott, Lennon and Chamberlain are basically the same player, also I like Walcott as a pacey forward. Whats Milner in for? Hard work? To protect a full back? What other top nation plays a winger to do that? Beckham can work hard and would run until he dropped for England, prefer Young on the left hand side personally. Also, Beckhams never had a great ability to beat a man, he's still had a pretty effective career though.

@Doozers20 you don't suppose ancellotti's hands could have been tied? Either way, Veratti played better, and ofc we'll include him for his crossing, that suggests you want him on the wing, where he can't take a man on, I'd have the ox, Walcott, Lennon, and even young and Milner before Beckham there

@owonefi7 You don't start a player signed for 'commercial value' in a game like this. Also, Pass success rate? Again with the stats, I saw Beckham popping the ball about quite nicely, and not just trying little five yard passes. Most of the PSG chances I saw came from a Beckham cross or ball forward. I didn't say Veratti wasn't better, I just said Beckham didn't look out of place as I thought he had a good game. I'd expect more than 4 centre mids in a 23 man squad but I agree them 4 I'd put ahead of Beckham, I don't think theres anyone still available with anywhere near the crossing ability.

I agree, i mean how on earth does milner get in the starting line up but Beckham doesn't even get a look in. I think he could bring lots to the national team, but the reality is he won't get a shot at it

@Doozers20 rubbish. How much better than Beckham was Veratti when he came on? Miles. Beckham is a novelty signing for his commercial and goodwill value. Nothing else, he's nowhere near a contender for the World Cup. There's usually four (Ish) spots for CM's - Wilshere, Gerrard, Lampard and carrick are all comfortably better, people say Beckham keeps the ball, his passing success rate yesterday was a mere 72%

I just find it funny how he's good enough to start a Champions League quarter final against the best team of the past few years, and no matter what anyone says he didn't look out of place, but can't get in England squad, or is at least being written off. He would definitely be a contender for a place in the next world cup squad, making it his last tournament.

Really? As much as I like the guy we need to focus on bringing our younger players through.

Great discussion point and I'd have to say (at the risk of being controversial) yes! He's past his best (obviously) but offers that little bit of class that many of his peers can't at their supposed peak.

He is past it. Did a great job in the past for England but its time for young players to come through and do their bit.
