My Villa Despair

Lambert's philosophy of signing young and hungry unknown players doesn't look like it's working. We all brought into it and thought we'd give it a chance but this season there's no sign of improvement from last. The style of football has massively regressed. Our current 11th place in the league is false. Another relegation battle is on the cards. Lambert has had £40,000,000 to spend on players at Villa in 2 seasons. And a lot of the players he's brought including a lot this summer aren't up to standard. Last season despite the relegation scrap it was enjoyable football to watch. We played passing exciting football and scored plenty of goals. This season we are a long ball team we can't keep the ball or pass it, we have the least amount of possession in the EPL, we are 1st or 2nd for the most long balls and we struggle to score goals. We've turned into a modern day Wimbledon. It's painfully dreadful to watch us play football. Our home record is horrendous 6 defeats 2 draws and only 2 wins at home in the league so far. Plus a defeat in the FA cup to 18th placed league one side Sheffield United yesterday. Season ticket money seems like an utter waste. Villa Park is a caldron of despair for home supporters these days.

Although Lambert's philosophy isn't working I don't blame all our problems on lambert I believe the roots of our problems are coming from our tight @rse chairman at the top. He seems as if he's happy to run us as a small club just happy to survive. He's had no ambition since MON walked out of the club. O'Neill knew what was coming hence the reason he walked IMO. Say what you want but Villa are a big club with a good history and a big fan base without the aid of glory supporters from all over the country. We rely on local support. We've never been relegated from the premiership we're ever presents. Playing just to survive in the Premier League season after season is not an acceptable ambition for Aston Villa FC or for the fans of Aston Villa. We should be looking to be top half team at the very least. The fans have put up with 4 seasons of relegation battles now. It's now become to much now and the fan base have became very disillusioned. Some have lost faith in Lerner, some have lost faith in Lambert and some have lost faith in both. Opinions differ in the fan base.

My personal opinion is that I think we need a new owner who will invest more in our playing squad and give us our shattered pride and ambition back. Lambert also needs to change his philosophy and bring in some more experienced quality players. The trouble is he probably won't be given the finance needed for that by Lerner although you can argue he has had 40 mil in 2 seasons to spend and he has wasted it on a lot of sh!te so Lambert must shoulder some blame. Although in his defence the tight wage structure has probably hamstrung his ability sign real quality.

The frightening thing about Lerner is if you listen to the fans of the NFL team in America the Cleveland Browns a team Lerner owned until recently they also say the same things about his lack of ambition he had for there team.

Lerner please sell up to somebody who will give us our pride and passion back! We want our Villa back!

@releasethekraken well put it this way, we had tonnes of fairly average players under Lambert but they played beyond their ability and with passion that we just haven't seen from the signings Hughton has brought in. Many games now are lost before we take to the pitch but under Lambert players like Tierney, Fox, Pilkington, Ward, Surman, Jackson etc. stepped up. At the moment we have a squad with better players but I wouldn't say they are playing any better than the old lot

@Posford where has this 'british players have more fight in them' thing come from? i see it being said all the time but it's based on absolutely nothing.

I agree that Lambert's policy isn't working and that is because he is using a different one to the successful one at Norwich. When he was at Norwich, Lambert was a stingy investor who bought into players of all ages but the key thing for him was that they were proven at a competitive professional level and they were hard working. Lambert got the most out of players like Elliot Bennet, Anthony Pilkington, Steve Morison, Marc Tierney, John Ruddy, Wes Hoolahan, Simeon Jackson, David Fox and Grant Holt and many more cos they prepared to work hard and prove they were good enough. Another thing was that most of the players he worked with were British and I tend to think that British players have a bit more fight in them when it comes to the tough end of the Premier League. Now are the likes of Joe Bennett, Baker, Sylla, Tonev, Herd proven Premier League quality? I'm not too sure. You might guess that some players at Villa are just there for the money like in many teams in the league, well that's why Lambert's at Villa anyway. Also have to question whether all these signings are Lambert signings and not people he's being told to sign

@Doozers20 his philosophy was no experienced players.

@Villa-Rich I just didn't get it because it would have cost them nothing, not like they were buying a player with no sell on value.

@Doozers20 he was in his stubborn mode in the summer. Only wanted young up and coming players. Refused experienced players. Only now he's changed his mind. But we end up with Grant holt lol.

@Villa-Rich I still can't believe he turned down barry if rumours are to be believed

@Doozers20 Yeah he will be for back up because Kozak broke his leg. I'm really starting to get worried the players aren't good enough we need quality experience and Holt ent really quality no more. If we lose to Liverpool sat which we probably will it's 7 defeats in 9 games. We need to turn that around or relegation is inevitable.

@Villa-Rich fair enough but I'm presuming he'll be back up at best anyway?

@Doozers20 Not sure about now thou he's 32 and if the reports are true and what his manager at Wigan said is true the he's carrying excess weight.

@Villa-Rich to be fair though, Holt was good under Lambert and has a 1 in 3 scoring record in the Prem.

@Doozers20 @Releasethekraken We're on the verge of signing Grant Holt from Wigan on loan. A player who can't get into Wigan's starting 11 in the championship. For me that sums up the ambition of our owner.

@Doozers20 @releasethekraken We need new ownership and someone who is willing to give the club the size and history of Villa the ambition it deserves. Currently Lerner seems happy as long as we're in the premiership surviving. Same story for his ownership of the Cleveland Browns. If we carry on playing with fire every season then we will get relegated and I don't think it would be a good thing. A lot of big clubs have gone down and not come back. Newcastle were an exception.

@releasethekraken I don't think villa need to go down to rebuild though to be honest, maybe spend a little on experience. These players may fall by the wayside otherwise

Getting relegated might not even be a bad thing for a team like villa. give them a chance to rebuild (like norwich and southampton have after being relegated twice). they get parachute payments so i doubt it'd cripple them that much financially. there are a few teams in the bottom half that have stagnated and need to rebuild and start again. west ham and fulham stand out as one of those. especially fulham.

@releasethekraken I don't want a Man City style take over. I just want somebody who will give us a little more ambition.the owners only ambition seems to be just to survive. We shouldn't be fighting relegation every season it's not good enough we're not a small club I've had enough of seeing rubbish mate. I want entertaining football and a team to be proud of like we've had through the majority of my time supporting them. Can't take no more. I'm on the verge of giving up my season ticket unless stuff changes 4 years of sh!t is enough

@jimbo1984 lol nah not seen it mate. That's the sort of stuff we have to resort to now especially in home matches. If we didn't have a laugh we'd cry lol.

@LawrenceQPR23 We are currently mid table but I don't think it will last. Lerner has been running us like a small club for nearly 4 seasons now and if it carries on we will end up relegated. The likes of Swansea and Southhampton have overtook us. I want him to sell up to somebody who will give the club ambition again.

@villa-rich would you rather have randy lerner and build things slowly and sensibly - or a sheikh like man city, and spend loads of money to propel you up the table quickly? cause i know how much you love to moan about teams buying success....
