@petergriffith94 Providing that we do replace him ... and with better. I guess the decision has to also be influenced by how much we could get for him and whether that price would likely rise or fall if he stayed in the side. I do agree completely that we should not merely keep players because of the price we originally paid for them, whether we were rogered in the deal or not.

@paulison Don't get me wrong. Downing has been pretty decent of late but I feel like we're trying to make it work because of the price tag. If he stays then I think he'll make a good squad member but if he leaves this Summer then all the best to him but I won't miss him all that much.

@petergriffith94 Couldn't agree more regarding both Carroll and Henderson but, I have to eat my words, and say that Downing did actually show a lot of improvement and some flare during the later part of the season - maybe not enough to be a first choice (pending signings) but enough to keep himself in contention.

@CAREFREEE Better or worse than when Chelsea ruined Shevchenko!?

He obviously does have his talents but I'm confident it's the right thing for him to move on. I don't think he ever fitted in. It was a dreadful signing and we had our pants well and truly glued to the floor on this one. I feel bad that Rodgers has to take flack for something that was out of his control. £15m is a decent price for him considering his goal to games ratio and his injury problems. People will make the point about a £20m loss but thats out of Rodgers' control. We can't keep players just because they've cost X amount. I think it's best to suck it up and just cut our losses. Same goes for Downing. Henderson on the other hand is proving to be a keeper.

West Ham are only a getting a good deal if he starts performing week in week out like at Newcastle and stays injury free. Ultimately the bottom line it that it was probably the worst signing in modern Liverpool history, still a decent player and I hope it works out for him

He's a class act and I wish him the best of luck elsewhere...

I'd say its a better move for West Ham, the second half of the season when he's been fit has been impressive

@AFC_Harry34 How is it "great" to pay 15m for a ponytail-creature like him?

I wish andy well but i'm glad he's leaving to be honest. worst transfer in the history of football and there probably will never be a worse one. let's hope if we get 15 million (more than i expected) we use it wisely to improve the squad.

Good luck in your future endeavours whether you land. I like Big Andy. He's unplayable in the air and I'm dissapointed that it didn't work out for him. It wasn't all his fault why it didn't work out. Hopefully he'll join a club where he can show his real talent and maintain a spot in the England squad. Not the best bit of business but it was best for the club and the player for him to move.

It would be nice, of course, if Newcastle did decide to bid that price up a bit .......

He is not going to feature in Rodger's plans going forward so debate about his quality or the loss on investment are moot. I feel that 15 million is a result as far as cash generation for us right now and could be very usefully invested elsewhere - providing that it is hard cash and not some mickey-mouse installment plan or appearance-related payout. I hope that for Carroll's sake he has an injury-free season and does well (not too well) wherever he does end up.

Although a fee has been agreed, I would imagine Andy Carroll would hold off signing a contract in the hope that Newcastle will match that fee.
