Possibly Mourinho himself at fault?

It occurred to me while watching the first half of the Chelsea Sunderland game that maybe Mourinho himself is at fault for Chelsea's inability to kill off opponents.

A pattern seems to be emerging with Chelsea. For the first 15 minutes of a half they are dominant. From then on their performance drops dramatically.

What I noticed during the Sunderland game was that initially when Sunderland had the ball  the Chelsea midfield and attack ran as if there was no tomorrow to close down any Sunderland player on the ball. It was hugely impressive. And when they were on the ball the Chelsea creative players were again also impressive. But again as the game wore it was as if they just ran out of juice.

Two possible conclusions for me - Firstly is the Chelsea team not as fit as Mourinho thinks they are? Secondly, are Mourinho's expectations of his players in terms of all out work-rate not realistic?

Of the two I suspect the latter.

@Jonevarro - I don't see there is actually any contradiction. Efficiency can lead to goals. With the talent he had at Madrid you can expect goals especially as the majority of other teams in their league are there to make up the numbers

@TaffWells yet Madrid broke the record for most goals in a season? How do you explain that one?

Mourinho has never produced a team that plays primarily attacking, exciting football and I don't think he aims to either. His approach is to produce WINNING teams and from his perspective that is what owners and (usually) fans want. He is an exceptionally intelligent human being and he has worked out that if you can get a team together of fairly intelligent players who have a high work rate ethic (to the exclusion of the ultra creative sort of players - hence his reluctance to play the likes of Juan Mata) and who are able to obey and put into action his own tactical genius on the pitch then you get success. Mourinho's mantra is effciency before everything else. Entertainment per se comes low on his list of priorities,

@Jonevarro chelsea are as defensive as west ham, just that they have better plays, teams like west brom and everton went away to old trafford and played positive football and won so thats no excuse, everton went away to arsenal and played positive football and drew the match so dont use playing away as an excuse to play negative football, chelsea have been poor all season, and havent put in one convincing performance this season

@youngl so because we played defensively away from home against two big teams we play negatively now? Pure idiocy. I've watched every game this season and we do certainly not play negatively. As I've said many times if we had a striker like Aguero or Suarez we'd be top scorers and everyone would be saying how positive we are, it's because we have shît strikers so it doesn't look as impressive.

@releasethekraken defensive in two big away games against two of the biggest teams in the country? Not sure how that's a bad thing. Mourinho has always said to win the title you need to win all of your home games and don't lose the away games.

@Jonevarro the 2 most mind-numbingly dull PL games in the last few years have both been monday night games where jose mourinho's chelsea have visited a rival's ground and it's finished 0-0. think conditions played a part tonight to be fair and arsenal were absolute aids too, but still. hardly a coincidence. mourinho gets results but is one of the more defensive managers.

@TittleTan all I've heard it's that he's said if Everton are in champions league he would like to go back on loan next season

@Doozers20 This season, he has slated Chelsea, said he was unhappy and wants to leave and has also said he would like to stay at Everton on a permanent basis. The same obvious things get brought up every time. Ba, Etoo, Torres bla bla bla. Yes we know, its pretty obvious.

@Jonevarro I prefer counterattacking football to possession based, boring the other team into submission type football. This is why I don't look too much at numbers and like to watch football. Shots and goals I could possibly agree with, possession I don't though, that can be kept in the middle of the park... Having watched the big games though, Mourinho has been far from positive, particularly at Old Trafford.
