Should Steven Gerrad be played less or dropped?

Steven Gerrard, has been a great servant for Liverpool the past 15 years, but i believe if brendan rodgers wants to take this liverpool team forward and challenge for top 4, gerrard needs to be played alot less, dropped for matches when he performs like he did against arsenal, hull, & everton or gerrard should be pushed higher up if Rodgers isn't brave enough so he doesn’t have to do so much running. Another reason why I believe Gerrard should be played allot less is due to his tendency to play longs balls instead of trying to dictate the ball. Your probably thinking why I don’t think lucas should be dropped, this is due to him being the only defensive midfield in the Liverpool team, and he himself (Lucas) hasn’t played to well this season, and given away numerous fouls in dangerous position, this is due to gerrard lack of tracking back and having to do a 2 man job. Who do I think should replace our captain joe allen, he knows how to dictate play and has the legs to track back and support lucas.

So if Liverpool are aiming for a top 4 position gerrard has to be more effective than just delivering free-kicks, another solution is to sign a need midfield for example yohan cabaye he very good technically, and if he was signed to chop and change with gerrard, we wouldn’t lose out set-pieces due to cabaye being one of the premier leagues best dead ball specialist.

@MB_Ktubes yeah that's why I'm talking Norwich, not the big games, suppose that could be said with more conviction if Liverpool hadn't just lost to Hull though.

@Doozers20 Should be able too but as you've mentioned with Giggs and Scholes who didn't always play in the big games United have enough quality to cope. We don't. I'm a big Henderson fan but he isn't going to be as good as Gerrard is on his day.

@MB_Ktubes you not think Henderson and lucas could handle the likes of norwich at home?

Yes but for his own benefit but we needed at least 2 midfielders before this can happen. Gerrard is an outstanding player on his day and his set-pieces are superb but he is ageing and it's showing. I don't think he should be dropped completely but at least subbed off in games. Cabaye would be a great signing but at a big cost.

@Doozers20 yeah that i was think use gerrard like how giggs is being used so he can contribute and be more effective within matches, i watch giggs against leverkusen he bossed the midfield that day and his pass was a joy, after that performance he was dropped was it fair not really but due to his lack of legs he cant play 2 games in week

It'd be good if we signed someone that could play as gerrard used to, but until then our options are to limited to drop him. I don't rate cabaye though, and you can't complain to much about stevie's long balls because he still completes 9/10 of them, no-one else can do that in our team

I think Gerrard should be managed as Giggs is now, he probably starts once every 2 weeks but when he plays he is excellent... Norwich at home for me is a game that Gerrard can be left on the bench, use two of Henderson, Allen and Lucas with Coutinho in front of them.

I disagree with playing him further forward to, if I was a Liverpool fan I'd prefer to see Coutinho there, or Suarez when Sturridge comes back. I'd sit him deep, tell him to come forward rarely and play more of a 'quarter back' role.

It's unfortunate to say but Gerrard's best days are behind him and he can't play at his high standards week-in-week-out. Liverpool's problem is they don't have anyone or enough players to effectively replace him. Lampard is going in a similar to Gerrard however they can afford to leave him out cos of how many quality midfielders Chelsea have. Personally I'd like to see Gerrard playing less games, he is injury prone after all, and give Jordan Henderson more of a chance. Whenever he plays against Norwich he looks like a great player but Liverpool need more confidence in him
