Stuart Pearce slams players for refusing to play in Under 21s

Stuat Pearce has critised Phil Jones & Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for allegedly refusing to play in the Under 21 European Championship.

Speaking on Sky Sports' La Liga podcast, Pearce is quoted saying "There were eight players with senior international caps who could have played for my Under-21s. Apathy played a big part of it – the Oxlade-Chamberlains of this world, the Phil Joneses, because they didn’t want to come.

“Once they go through the golden ivory towers of the seniors they don’t want to come and play with the Under-21s any more. Until we solve that problem there will be no success.”

Many other countries had players playing in the Under 21 Championship who have been capped in the seniors. Why do England players pull out? Should the FA stop giving them the option?

Stuart Pearce is the same man who said that Stan Collymore represented better value than Dennis Bergkamp when he signed for Arsenal in 1995. That sums Pearce up really.

Understandable if you turn down the Under 21's with a chance of playing for the senior team in the same week as the u 21's match, but I can't understand anyone turning down the chance to go to the Olympics or an under age tournament

I can understand what he's saying. that team he took to israel was poor. shouldn't have lost to israel obviously but by then their tournament was over. when you consider norway flew some players to israel from senior national duty the day after some of them had played in a full international it's not a surprise that we didn't do too well. stuart pearce is the scapegoat - i really don't know what he's done to get as much stick as he does. far from it for me to criticise them for not wanting to go to the tournament but if you compare us to other countries i think you will see the difference and hence the difference between our national teams - their young players are hungry and don't think they've made it yet. i've said it before - our young players get given senior england caps too soon when they don't deserve them, move to a big club and get paid too much, and think they're god's gift before they actually achieve anything. don't be at all surprised in 2 years time when the likes of sterling, barkley and zaha can't be bothered to go to the U21 tournament.

Even without a few of these players pierce had a much better team than most that beat them. Just trying to save his own ass

That is the problem! Our u21 players get drafted to first team too early. The likes of Jones, Chamberlain, Carroll, Stirling should all be with our u21 squad.

Pearce should be grateful he stayed in that job for as long as he did!!! Whether its true or not, doesn't matter because he still a quality youngsters in the squad and couldn't get the best out of them. Who's to say if bale, ox etc did play if he would of got them to produce. Like @mrsentah said sour grapes

If this is true then that's shocking. The first team weren't involved in any proper competitions this summer so they should've played for the U21's. I think the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain and Phil Jones would've made a bigger difference rather than playing in some stupid friendly with Brazil

Sour grapes, awful manager. I mean to be sacked and then replaced by Southgate
