Where would you play Rooney?

I've been reading the United messageboards and a lot is mentioned about Rooneys position, some believe he should lead the line, others say number 10, and others say he should play deep in midfield as he has many attributes to be successful there.

I think he is in the right position should we find a way for him to work properly with Van Persie, and Van Persie stops having paddies on the pitch. However I'd also like to see him leading the line with Kagawa, Mata and Januzaj behind him, I'd be interested to see if they could interchange with each other.

For England I'd like to see him either behind Daniel Sturridge with Lallana and Townsend either side of him and Wilshire and Gerrard behind him, or as a type of false 9 in between Welbeck and Sturridge with Jones/Carrick, Gerrard and Wilshire behind him.

@jimbo1984 But if Van Persie leaves, who goes up front if Rooney is behind the striker?

Rooney playing behind the striker is his natural position...
Midfield is wasted on him,.. If van persie wants to leave then let him leave... Rooney is the better all round player

@releasethekraken I was just about to come on and change that, Sterling over Townsend on this seasons form definitely. Though I'd be intrigued to see him in between Welbeck and Sturridge, great pace in that attack. On 2nd thoughts I'd have Henderson over Carrick or Jones on this seasons form too, drop Gerrard deeper have Henderson and Wilshere play box to box, sort of like a diamond formation.

@doozers20 townsend should be nowhere near the england team IMO. has barely played for tottenham this season. one good game for england and he's been massively overrated. sterling miles ahead of him surely.

Number 10/behind the striker is a position made for rooney and his attributes IMO. in a 4-2-3-1 his position is obvious, but for england i'd like to see a 4-3-3 so i wouldn't mind seeing him as the most attacking of the midfield 3 (very similar position to the behind the striker role in a 4-2-3-1, but he'd have to stick with the midfield a bit more), like where coutinho plays for liverpool. with sturridge up front. for me rooney has the work rate required to play that position, and has the vision and quality to pick quick passes and set up counter attacks for the likes of sterling and sturridge. but at the same time that will lessen his likelihood of scoring, which is another asset of his, especially for england. but then again, i believe sturridge is more than capable of being the main striker given his club form. so it's a difficult one.
